All In London

Joining the eclectic mix and popular Zone 1 area of Old Street is The 3 Crowns Public House and Kitchen. Three new generation pub enthusiasts are claiming this prime location as their own and are finally bringing the residents of Old Street a truly local pub with an edge.

Launched by Luca Mathiszig-Lee, Lee Urch and Rohit Patkar, The 3 Crowns is set to become the hub for those looking to escape the built up surroundings of random buildings and dual carriageways of Old Street with a welcoming and relaxed environment.

The green tile exterior of the building adds a deceiving element to this long awaited watering hole, but for those who were taught never to judge a book by it’s cover the juxtaposition of solid oak paneling, leather banquettes and beautiful skylights keeping the space light and alive is a welcome surprise.

Cleverly designed to ensure guests get their desired vibe, the venue is split in two – with the spacious and lively bar at the front and the restaurant separated by a grand curtain at the back. The décor itself is timeless and classic and, like a fine wine, designed to only get better with age.

The open kitchen run by Head Chef Lee focuses on honest cooking. The breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are centered around seasonal, well sourced produce and creating delicious dishes with culinary flair. Seasonality is the only staple in The 3 Crowns kitchen with the menu changing daily and creativity going against the grain of gimmicky cooking to create a modern European menu with Mediterranean influences.

Old World wines are sourced from France, Sicily and Lebanon, which meshes well with the cocktail menu, which maintains an old classic theme with traditional Martini variations, Tom Collins and Campari Sprtiz for summer.

The three owners have joined forces to combine their wealth of experience to create The 3 Crowns Public House and Kitchen. Head Chef Lee Urch, who worked alongside famous chef Jeremy Lee for over 10 years and assisted in the launch of Quo Vadis, Restaurant Manager Rohit Patkar who launched and ran the rooftop at Boundary and Bar Manager Luca Mathiszig-Lee who learned his craft after seven years at The Eagle in Farringdon, are bringing together their eclectic personalities and talents to every aspect of their new venture.

Lee, Rohit and Luca, the creative collective behind the new Old Street local, designed the public house with the concept of it being an extension of your living room. From students to solicitors and drinks to dinner this relaxed and original venue shows no sign of pretence. The three creative heads that adorn The 3 Crowns embrace the ever- changing menu in the kitchen and bar alike, and let their eclectic tastes and inspirational talents speak for themselves.

All In London Review

A refined, comfortable Shoreditch pub

Review Image
Set up by the triple threat team of a head chef, restaurant manager and bar manager, The Three Crowns launched with a remit to cover all bases of the modern pub. Fast-forward to now and judging by what we find on our visit, they’ve succeeded. Neatly sliced up into sections, the pub takes care of all bases with its separate dining and drinking areas.

A short walk from Old Street Roundabout, The Three Crowns is lucky to be just the right side of Shoreditch to make it a venue you have to search for rather than stumble on, which would explain the clientele. Turning up on a Sunday lunchtime we find the pub filled with what looks like a well-heeled, slightly older crowd than some of the neighbourhood’s wilder pubs. Broadsheets are spread over tables and there is a calm ambiance to the proceedings.

Sporting a modern interior, The Three Crowns has done away with the trappings of the classic pub and gone for white walls, airy skylights and modern design fixtures. With around two-thirds of the space dedicated to dining – although there is more than enough room to feel comfortable in the bar area by the entrance - food is clearly big here. Main courses are priced at £10-£17.50 and the modern European menu is ambitious. We liked the look of the potato pancake, smoked eel, poached egg & pancetta and can recommend the excellent sea bass & artichokes. Our one issue with the Three Crowns was with the building’s warmth, however, the food more than made up for that. As a bonus there are fixed menu lunch deals for two or three courses during the week.

Good food without good drinks wouldn’t do and the Three Crowns doesn’t let itself down on that front. Along with a concise range of classic cocktails there is an excellent wine list and a range of over ten draught beers. Always on the lookout for a welcoming pub in Shoreditch minus the Jaeger-bombing, nitrous oxide swallowing crowd that seem to call it home, we like the Three Crowns very much. A refined and comfortable pub choice.
