All In London Review

Tried and trusted

When you leave the station at Richmond you often smell fish - and it is Don Fernandos that is responsible. Peering through the front window it looks small and intimate. But as you move past the bustling bar area and front tables you go up a few steps and through to yet more tables at the back and then emerge into an even bigger seating area to the right. So it’s deceptive.

Now. I have had better tapas. And I have eaten in more modern and prettier restaurants. But this place has been here for ages. And will probably still be here for many more years. Tried and trusted.

The plastic coated tablecloths don’t say “exclusive” and “posh”. Yet the other décor says “authentic” and “relaxed”. And I doubt you’ll get food critics jumping up and down with excitement. But the menu is extensive and reasonably priced. The food is pretty much what you expect. But the general décor, the real buzziness of the place and the always friendly (albeit incredibly busy) staff make it a place that is reliably welcoming.

Not a place for a romantic dinner a deux – unless you want to keep things nice and light. But fabulous for a girls (or blokes) evening out on your way to the many bars and other places that Richmond has to offer. It’s a regular haunt. I have even been here for a post shopping lunch and an informal business lunch. The place is never empty.

Most people eat tapas here. Some of the favourites I have eaten there that don’t disappoint include: chorizo in white wine (£4.95), skewers of seafood and king prawn (£6.25), prawns with chilli and garlic (£6.45), griddled sardines (£4.25), patatas bravas (£4.25), tortilla (£3.95), fried cheese (queso frito - £3.95) and pimientos del Padron (£3.95).

But if you want a main meal the paellas are respectable (£8 to £14 per person) and have steaks and other meat dishes on the menu. Wines are from £14 a bottle and there are quite a few choices (including quite a few half bottles) – but I usually go for a rioja.

And if you happen to go on a day when there is rugby (and they do a suitably meaty special rugby menu) on at nearby Twickenham, it is jammed pack with supporters who are all generally jolly and well behaved and lots and lots of fun.
