We have discovered this hidden treasure with my husband after we have been looking for a nice place to eat in Upton Park area where we live. Immediately after first visit we knew, we'll be back. The food is home-made and delicious and the owner himself is usually around to welcome you. You will be served with dignity, respect and kindness as you should. If you like quiet environment, privacy and do not fuss about over-styled expensive restaurants this place has got fantastic atmosphere. And the prices are more then gentle for quality meals you'll be getting there! We love it!

One of my local restaurants and my all time favourite.

Good, well run, friendly family business, always service with a smile.

I have never tried curry as good as at Udaya and as mentioned previously the menu is different to the commonplace curries found in other Indian restaurants in the area.

Can Highly recommend the devilled prawns and mango fish curry, accompanied by lemon rice. Absolutely delicious! Could not fault the food.

My only wish is that they could offer a delivery service!

we are Brits with a keralean heritage and we loving eating here. Especially the deep fried tilapi - you can never get fish like this anywhere else. Trust me if you like spicy fish and you will love this. My kids don't like overly spicy food but they love the food at udaya especially the starters - e.g the prawn 65 and the butterfly chicken which we asked them to do it mild. We normally order the kerala sadya which is excellent value for money. True the food takes a while but it is well worth the wait and the owners and the staff are so polite. Not a fancy place but is clean & cosy for familie

On a Sunday lunchtime we were four hungry vegetarians. We were made welcome, the menu was explained with care and courtesy, the dishes we ordered were all delicious. Spices were catered according to our respective tastes. If it's always like this, we would heartily recommend Udaya.

This restaurant is an absolute gem. The prices are worringly cheap, but the quality of food and level of service is significantly better than you'd get in a central London restaurant. The staff are extremely polite and friendly.

This is a Sri Lankan / Keralan curry house that DOES NOT offer the usual generic curries. This is a place to enjoy some truly traditional dishes that will only disappoint those that like their anglicised curries and nothing else.

I'd highly recommend trying the Keralan dishes, which will all be cooked fresh to order and customised to your pallet in terms of level of spice.

The interior is somewhat sparsely decorated, but everything is very clean (including the toilets). My only slight criticism would be the food can take a while to come out of the kitchen when they're busy - but it's always worth the wait.

This must be one of the best Indian-style restaurants in London, and one of the cheapest. Do not be put off by the low prices, and as another comment on this website has already said, instead, leave a nice tip!

This has to be the best and nicest curry house in London. The owners and staff are truly delightful and the food is sublime and embarrassingly cheap. Make sure you leave a big tip! Local parking is easy, their menu features dishes from Sri Lanka and Kerala and is unlike any other Indian Restaurant I have ever eaten in. My friends have all loved the experience, allow plenty of time to savour the delights, it is a slow dining experience to be relished. As for the homemade pickles... delicious. I go often, I just wish it was nearer! They deserve to be fully booked permanently. Definitely worth the journey.

I have been to this restaurant twice now, and would recommend it to anyone. Excellent food and friendly and polite service. The decor is simple and the ambiance is family friendly.

When you go, allow plenty of time to read through the menu, choose something you've never had before, and savour the food. It really is worth it. The owner/waiter is happy to talk you through the choices and recommend something to suit your taste. And at these very reasonable prices you can afford to experiment too!

I particularly enjoyed the succulent fish and mango curry, the crispy anchovies with red onions and the creamy spinach and lentils. Basics like samosas are very good, and chutneys taste fresh and home made.

They were even happy to tailor a prawn dish to the exact preferences of a fussy eater in our party - no onions or 'bits'! They gave every impression that it was a pleasure to do it for him (even though I wanted to hit him over the head with the menu).

If you lifted the whole place and plonked it elsewhere in London it would be full of Guardian readers (I'm one), and celebrities with 'street cred', claiming to have 'discovered' it and air-kissing the owner. Please no!

When looking for a restaurant to take my Grandad to in Upton Park, my girlfriend and I looked a couple of places and their respective reviews. After visiting Udaya (mostly because of convenience) I thought I should really pass on details of my positive experience. Initially I thought the last review on here was written by someone related to the restaurant - so read on if you want an objective opinion -

Food - tasty fresh, light. Well spiced, varied and colourful without being stuffed full of food colouring and other nasties.

Service - Friendly, unintrusive and polite. Sometimes felt like we were eating round a friends house - which on this occasion worked well (but might not on others).

Atmosphere - arriving at 6pm - I thought the three of us might be the only guests in the place, but I was wrong. It filled up quickly. Chatty, light and relaxed.

Value - Just under £45.00 for 3 with alcohol and probably more food than we should have ordered. Main dishes are £3-5, which I thought was very very reasonable.

I would recommend this place for anyone wanting a conversation friendly venue with tasty south indian style food - simple place and thoroughly enojoyed it.

Celebrated a friends birthday here. The food was mouthwateringly delicious, some very intersting items on the menu that I had not come across before. The management were very good at explaining what dishes were or what they contained. Everything was cooked from scratch, and so was lovely and fresh, however, it meant that service took longer than I am used to, which was annoying, however, when the food did arrive, it was definitely worth the wait. Value for money without a doubt, I recommend highly.
