All In London Review

An undeniably attractive gastro pub where you could easily lose a lazy weekend.

Having walked past The Crooked Well a number of times, deciding that it didn’t lend itself to drinks only, we visited on a Lottery winning high. Having scooped four numbers over the weekend and bagged £139, we were feeling flush - that’s right, we pay our way (most of the time) when we go out reviewing.

On a cold Monday night, Camberwell’s most famous gastro pub – we feel we can say it just outstrips the Camberwell Arms for class – was a warm place to disappear to. Opting for a window seat on raised high stalls, we cast envious eyes over those who had chosen the heavy wooden dining tables set in the two spacious dining areas at either end of the pub. After being seated and given menus we were forced to make our own way to the bar to order a bottle of the heavy, comforting Niero Reserva, Malbec. Hey-ho, those other three tables must have been very demanding. Sharing an excellent artichoke flower, wild mushroom and homemade mayonnaise starter, we were stoked: lottery win, great wine, delicious starter and a radiator by our knees keeping us cozy? What a Monday! However, that kind of bliss doesn’t last. Slightly let down by the main of pork belly - with what the Crooked Well called a ‘jus’ and I called apple sauce - the meal couldn’t quite follow the standards it set from the starters.

The Crooked Well is a smart space, all exposed brick, exotic tiling and handsome lampshades and the food almost lived up to the style. A little too pricey for the standard of grub we were served – and the lack of attentive service – but we’d still come back for more. It’s the ideal spot for a Sunday roast in Camberwell, an undeniably attractive gastro pub that you could happily hang out in all day.
