Pay it forward at this classic greasy spoon

Big-heartedness at The Hope Workers Cafe

Where: The Hope Workers Cafe, 111 Holloway Rd, London N7 8LT

The Hope Workers Cafe on Holloway Road has been open since 1937, serving hearty English breakfasts for more than 85 years, thereby surviving gentrification, the pandemic, and so far the cost of living crisis that has put many independent pubs and eateries out of business.

The owners, a husband and wife team, are in charge of most of the cooking, which includes numerous versions of the full English and Greek-inspired dishes from their native Cyprus. It's hearty and wonderfully affordable - where else will you find a fry up with all the trimmings including chips, black pudding and a hot drink for £7?

You can also donate the cost of a meal, which the affable owners will prepare, no questions asked, to whoever comes in needing hot food.
