Visit the (former) home of London's bishops

133 bishops and counting...

Where: Fulham Palace House & Garden

From sometime in the 11th century until the 1970s, this pretty building was home to London's bishops, historically used as a summertime country retreat before Fulham was part of the big smoke. Given its age and that it has been home to a total of 133 bishops, the building has seen a number of renovations in different styles, some of which are evident today in various wings and extensions.

Now a Grade I-listed building, it has a chapel, a moat bridge, vinery and stables, and the 13-acre grounds are an important botanical garden - the second oldest in London after the Chelsea Physic Garden.

Best of all, entry to both the palace and the garden is free and you don't need to book in advance.
