The Dispute
The Will

An undisputed master of French comedy, Marivaux examines the tangled lives and loves of the 18th century nobility. In The Dispute idle aristocrats test the nature of love by releasing into society two pairs of adolescents who have been raised in strict seclusion. Neil Bartlett’s translation (originally commissioned for the RSC and Lyric Hammersmith) is paired with a later and rarely-performed work, The Will, in which the hard-up upper class connives to out-wit a will and marry for love as well as money.
