The child was born in the back of a 1949 Hudson as it rolled out of New York harbour, heading west for the nearest speakeasy. The radio, still jammed on war time hit parades, spewed out a diet of Louis Jordan and Hank Williams, until a Pittsburgh mechanic added a little Blue Note oil, releasing gallons of gumbo and Memphis soul stew. The young boy swallowed it all up hungrily, before trading in his wheels for a spinet piano and a job in a juke joint. Here, folks back home sent him British rock n roll on vinyl, before he hit the road again with a trunk full of gospel, jump and bluegrass...”
