American born artist Charles Krafft’s iconic work specialises in what he refers to as ‘Disasterware’; classical decorative ceramics that commemorate modern disasters. His previous subjects have stretched from tragedies such as the death of Amy Winehouse to modern political figures such as Kim Jong Il. Krafft’s delicate work is all created and finished by hand, following the time-honoured traditional techniques of the ceramicist, giving his work a modern folk feel. His new body of work, ‘Conjugal Visit: New Disasterware™’ focuses on ideas of imprisonment and escape;knives, guns, and molotov cocktails. Krafft takes a classical craft and juxtaposes with a comment of modern life and culture, in this case the nature and violence of the life in prisons such as ‘Sing Sing’ prison in New York and ‘Wormwood Scrubs’ in the UK. ‘Conjugal Visit: New Disasterware™’ continues along this theme; from delicate weapons to commemorative plates. Krafft’s unique style is something not to be missed.
