Soweto Kinch and Jonzi D collaborate on a ground-breaking work of music theatre where Jazz melodies meet street grooves in politically-charged debate.
Heralded as a ground-breaking work of music theatre, The Legend of Mike Smith mashes the lyricism of jazz with the energy of British hip-hop dance and theatre to tell the compelling story of Mike Smith, a young artist-everyman. Considering the temptations of consumerism and commercial pressures on the spirituality of the modern artist The Legend of Mike Smith takes a radical, original approach to theatre with a company of musicians, dancers and rappers meeting on-stage for an event that is much more than a gig. Jazz melodies meet street grooves in politically-charged debate before the final, imploring question “When will I be getting mine?”
Following the acclaimed album release in 2013 and now fully realised for the stage, the production features new choreography from guest director Ivan Blackstock (BirdGang).
