About the event

London gains a major new summer photography attraction when the international Travel Photographer of the Year awards (TPOTY) exhibit the latest world-class, prize-winning images at the University of Greenwich’s 10 Stockwell Street building (London SE10 8BD). Open seven days a week, the magnificent, free-to-view exhibition runs from August 4th to September 3rd.

In addition, TPOTY is holding a series of low-cost photography-related events in Greenwich. These include Summer Evening exhibition openings, Summer Talks with renowned photographers including Eamonn McCabe - the presenter of BBC Four’s recent ‘Britain in Focus’ series - photography workshops and photowalks.

From fiery lava flows and birds-eye views of one of the hottest places on Earth, to a magical, snow-swirled New York street scene that echoes an impressionist painting and from the imperious gaze of an elusive, endangered Iberian lynx to wonderfully minimalist images of West Kirby, England, the photographs going on display are glorious.

Photographers from over 120 countries took part in TPOTY 2016, and the award-winning images give a beautiful, fascinating, entertaining and, at times, moving, depiction of life, cultures, wildlife and landscape all over the planet.

The exhibition also features a retrospective showcasing the TPOTY judges and organisers’ favourite images from first 14 years of the awards, while TPOTY sponsor Jack Wills is displaying some of the best shots from its recent Instagram travel photo contest.

No booking or tickets are necessary as the TPOTY exhibition is free to visit.

The TPOTY Summer Talks will present fascinating talks from renowned photographers. Each Summer Talk ticket costs £30 and includes access to the exhibition when it is not open to the general public, drinks before the talk and in the interval - courtesy of Hurtigruten - and a free TPOTY Journey book.

• Thursday, August 10 - ‘Photographic story telling’ presented by 2013 TPOTY overall winner Timothy Allen - the photographer for the BBC’s landmark Human Planet Series

• Thursday, August 17 - ’Seeing and composing a winning image’ presented by multi-award-winning Picture Editor of the Year, News Photographer of the Year and Sports Photographer of the Year and presenter of BBC Four’s recent photography series ‘Britain in Focus’, Eamonn McCabe

• Thursday, August 24 - ’Making the most of a destination’ presented by 2014 TPOTY overall winner and one of the world’s top 200 advertising photographers, Philip Lee Harvey

TPOTY Summer Evenings (also on August 10, 17 and 24) allow visitors to avoid the crowds and enjoy a drink as they view the exhibition outside of its regular opening hours. Tickets cost £15 per person, to include a complimentary drink, courtesy of sponsor Hutigruten, and a free TPOTY Journey book.

Summer Talks and Summer Evenings tickets are available online

On Sunday August 13, 20 and 27, TPOTY founder Chris Coe will lead Photo Iconic workshops on ‘Understanding your Camera’ and ‘Understanding Composition’. ‘Understanding your Camera’ costs £15, while ‘Understanding Composition’, which includes an outdoor photoshoot, costs £20, or both courses can be booked together for £30, saving £5. Each participant also receives a free TPOTY ‘Journey’ book with every workshop booked.

Chris Coe and TPOTY judge Jeremy Hoare will be leading Greenwich Photowalks on Saturday August 12, 19 and 26. Fujifilm is providing its latest equipment for participants to use and the interactive sessions will visit several different locations in highly photogenic Greenwich. Each Photowalk costs £15, and participants also receive a free ‘Journey’ book.
