Scottish artist, Hermione Gibbs was raised in the bonnie Highlands. Born in 1988, she started painting as a child where she was captivated by her wild surroundings. A family holiday to the Outer Hebrides each summer was where it all began: “I remember having picnics on the white shell sand beaches and being mesmerized by the
crashing turquoise waves beneath the angry clouds scudding along the mountainous skyline” Hermione would go on to capture the quick changing landscapes and feathery wildlife in a dreamlike way; a form of Magical Realism.

Hermione expanded her knowledge of drawing and painting during a foundation course at Edinburgh, and she continued to identify herself as an artist in Florence over a six-year period. Traveling around the world to explore new countries and express their exuberant surroundings is what really inspired her. The colours of Cuba, India, Greece, Italy and in particular Scotland, are all reflected in her work.

Hermione guides us through her magical imagination by expressing herself in a sea of colour, using confident brush strokes to interpret landscapes and feathering exotic birds with extravagant flourishes. There is a great feeling of freedom and joy in her work, which seeps into the viewer’s psyche, creating a feeling of enlightenment and playfulness. Hermione does not always behold herself to one type of medium; combining materials together, she moves effortlessly through differing subjects, from flamboyant shimmering birds to thick oil smears of skies and mountains. “I don't want realism. I want magic!” said Tennessee Williams. “Count me in on that!” echoes Hermione. Palm Tree Gallery look forward to introducing an artist whose work is beaming with brilliance!
