ANDREW MCCORMACK Andrew launched his solo career in 2006 with his debut album, 'Telescope', which was greeted with considerable critical acclaim and led to him receiving the BBC Jazz Award for ‘Rising Star’. He has performed with numerous distinguished jazz musicians since then, including Randy Brecker, Courtney Pine, Jamie Cullum, Tony Remy and Christine Tobin and is currently a pivotal player in both the Jean Toussaint quartet and the Kyle Eastwood Band. With his own Trio, he has released two albums, including First Light which received 5 Stars from BBC Music Magazine, and his latest “All-Star” group “Graviton” took things even further, bringing together some of the most acclaimed musicians in contemporary jazz, including Sons of Kemet saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings and the Mercury Prize nominee Eska on vocals. As well as a fluent and exciting pianist Andrew has more recently established himself as composer and arranger of some note, with works that include a major commission for the London Symphony Orchestra that premiered at the Barbican and contributions to the score and orchestrations of three of Clint Eastwood’s recent films. For this 606 date, Andrew will return to the Trio setting that has served him so well, choosing the top-notch rhythm section of Tom Herbert (Polar Bear) & Shane Forbes (Empirical) to lend their consummate musicianship to what Andrew describes as “the ‘standard’ repertoire in the same vein as the classic Keith Jarrett/Bill Evans/Brad Mehldau trios of the past”. Andrew is truly a world class musician & we’re delighted to welcome him back to the 606.
