Maupin - A new play by Margo MacDonald - reading - Theatre at Draper Hall

It’s 17th-century Paris and Julie d’Aubigny Maupin is the talk of the town.
Publicly, she’s a titillating scandal; privately, she battles with demons she cannot name and tries on many identities as she seeks to find herself. The life of the woman known as “La Maupin” reads like something Alexandre Dumas and Oscar Wilde might have dreamt up in an evening of drinking together, but amazingly it’s true. Julie d’Aubigny Maupin—a cross-dressing, swordfighter, opera singer, duellist, and bi-sexual adventuress—shrugged off the expected norms of her day and became a timeless legend. More than an adventurous life, Maupin’s struggles give us insight into our own quests to find a true identity. It’s a story for anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to be the person no one expects them to be.

We are proud to be welcoming back to Draper Hall Canadian playwright and performer Margo MacDonald who staged here the London premiere of her sold out out play The Elephant Girls in 2017.

This will be a reading of her new play Maupin and yet another London premiere for Draper Hall.
