Free Word announces a new season of events questioning how our fundamental right to shelter, belonging and safety can be achieved in a world where home is insecure, fragile and on the brink of collapse. A major new installation by interdisciplinary design collective RESOLVE will showcase alternative voices and texts and explore the ways ‘home’ can be written and erased. Poet Amina Jama transforms Free Word’s cafe space into a 1990s Somali Living Room, paying homage to black Britishness, migration, and the creativity that arises from displacement.
Through live performances, debates, poetry readings, discussions and interactive workshops the season will address the global precariousness of home with Ed Daffarn, Lowkey, CLASS Think Tank, Faiza Shaheen, London Renters Union, English PEN; displacement through gentrification, migration and exile withReporters Without Borders, Inua Ellams, Roger Robinson, Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, Raymond Antrobus, Theresa Lola, Amaal Said; and the ways we can bring new meaning to ideas of home with Shelter, Soofiya, VOKS, The Literary Consultancy, Lars Saabye Christensen, Touching Bass and more tba.
