Sex Cells

Sex Cells – the basis for reproduction, the beginning of life and parenthood; but those same words verbally spoken imply a statement of commerce and capitalism. This clever play, written by Anna Longaretti, is full of such contrast.

Set in the call centre of a sex toy manufacturer, Sex Cells is a very funny, poignant play about motherhood, friendship, love and loss.

The touching characters, all with their strengths, weaknesses and quirks, portray a myriad of life experiences – from Janice, the mother of five who is constantly giving to others at the expense of her self-identity, to Lily, the mature mother of one who stuck in a loveless marriage and estranged from her son and hides her feelings under a layer of wise-cracks; from carefree Tiffany who enjoys being childless and takes action to avoid motherhood, to Sylvie, an immigrant who feels alone and would do absolutely anything to be a mother. Amongst all of these women is their clueless manager, Mr Causeway, who desperately tries to keep the peace in the workplace between his diverse staff and helplessly vies for the attention of one of them.

This drama with humour – or is it a comedy with drama? – is poignantly moving and sees its audience both crying and laughing. It is not to be missed!

Produced by The Roses Theatre Company and directed by Emily Elfer with Assistant Director Nicole Wood, this production is being held at one of London’s newest fringe theatres, The Chapel Playhouse in Kings Cross, opening on Wednesday 23rd October at 7.30pm and runs for a limited 5 nights. Tickets are a steal at £12 and so pre-booking is strongly recommended.
