Professor Cliff Eisen investigates the church music with which Mozart came into contact in Italy, and recounts the celebrated story of how the 14-year-old composer inadvertently flaunted a longstanding Papal decree by writing out the music of Allegri’s Miserere from memory, having heard it performed at the Sistine Chapel.
Musical examples are provided by the Chamber Choir of King’s College, London, conducted by Edward Jones.
