225 athletes compete for 32 gold medals

Cycling is one of the newest additions to the Paralympic games. Originally paralympic cycling was developed as a tandem sport for blind athletes paired with sighted partners. Today, Paralympic cycling uses both two and three wheeled bikes over a range of distances and on a variety of different terrains.

Road events became part of the Paralympics in Seoul in 1988 with track races becoming part of the Paralympics in Atlanta in 1996. Today, more than forty countries are represented at the Paralympic games. Hand-cycling is one of the newest additions to the Paralympic games becoming a feature in 2004 and is suitable for those with lower limb disabilities. Each competitor is allocated a class based on their disability and wears a helmet reflecting the class that they have been allocated.

There is no one country that is dominant in the Paralympic games when it comes to cycling and this makes it one of the most popular spectator sports during the Paralympic games.
