The land on which the mansion was erected was formally known as ‘Temple Croft Field’ due to the Knights Templars being granted use of this land in the mid 1200’s. By 1312 the land belonged to the Knights Hospitaller also known as the Order of Hospitallers; these were a group of men attached to a hospital in Jerusalem and evolved as a Military Hospital. The Knights Templars reined this land until 1540 when it was seized by Henry Vlll in 1540.
The House was originally owned by the Bishop of London but in 1874 it was purchased by Henry Charles “Inky” Stephens adeptly named due to his father being the inventor of the famous blue & black ink.
Paranormal Activity has been reported within Avenue House & the grounds for many years, such ghostly occurrences include unaccompanied footsteps, the feeling of being watched and followed. Cold spots come and go for no rational explanation and spirit lights have been seen with the naked eye by many unsuspecting visitor alongside the witnessing of a female spirit manifest.
Avenue House is reputed to be one of The Most Haunted Buildings in London with activity running rife!
Ghost Search UK have been granted permission to investigate this highly active building and we ask the faint hearted to be prepared!!
