About the event

This is a great opportunity to draw on the knowledge of our Chief Ecologist Richard Bullock, and local naturalist and columnist Tony Drakeford. They’ll tell you all about these animals and their habitats and provide plenty of tips on ID.

At this time of year, the butterflies we expect to find include the delicate Green-veined white, grassland-loving Small and Essex skippers, and the Speckled wood, a woodland species found in shaded areas with dappled sunlight.

We will also be looking for the striking Six-spot burnet, a day flying moth which favours blue and purple flowers such as Field scabious and Black knapweed. July dragonflies include Emperor dragonfly, Azure damselfly, Common darter, Brown hawker, and Black-tailed skimmer. Finally, we may also spot the exotic looking Volucella zonaria – a large hoverfly which looks like a wasp or hornet.

This walk will also give keen photographers the chance to take pictures of these colourful insects while discovering more about them
