King's Cross Ice Cream Festival

Delicious new summer weekender, the King’s Cross Ice Cream Festival, is set to take place in London’s newest public space, Granary Square, on 1st and 2nd September, 2012.

The free, family friendly, two-day festival showcases the best ice creams available in London and the South East and celebrates the history and production of ice cream in the region.

The weekend event also celebrates Carlo Gatti who brought ice cream to England in 1851, working from his home in King’s Cross where he sold gelato for one penny, coining the phrase the ‘penny lick’.

Families and ice cream enthusiasts can learn how ice cream is made, starting with the cow, goat or sheep, right through to the cone.

The festival is all about getting involved, whether that’s milking one of the cows in the petting farm; helping to make ice cream using the latest in nitrogen technologies or learning how ice cream was first brought to London from Europe.

Ice cream lovers will also be able to watch and take part in ice cream art, build a sandcastle on the Granary Square beach, plus experience a taste of history as the festival brings back the infamous penny lick.

For true foodies and ice cream enthusiasts the event is also a unique chance to seriously investigate the technologies and process behind different products with experts from some of London and the South East’s best renowned ice cream makers and sellers in attendance.

Showing off their creations will be Morelli’s of Harrods; Gelatorino of Covent Garden and their maestri demonstrating how traditional gelato is made; nitrogen ice cream specialist Mad Cap Charlie; and Shepherds of Herefordshire bringing their award winning ice cream made from sheep’s milk, among many others.

Anna Strongman from King’s Cross comments: ‘The history of ice cream in King’s Cross is fascinating and we are delighted to be producing our first Ice Cream Festival to celebrate it.

‘The festival is full of surprises and with everything from a dairy petting farm to nitrogen ice cream making demonstrations to look forward to the event promises to fun for all the family.’

Science Boffins are also performing a free show at the festival. With their unique brand of interactive and fun science experiments the Boffins will capture the imagination of kids of all ages.
