Okinawa Day is a small cultural festival which will return to Spitalfields for a fourth year in order to showcase the best in traditional Okinawan food, music, performance and art in celebration of peacetime.
The event consists of musical performances under the canopy and a handful of food and traditional craft stalls will surround the event. In addition craft activities will take place on landscaped areas of Bishops Square. This family orientated event typically attracts 2,000 people to the Square across the day.
In addition, 23rd June is the memorial day in Okinawa to commemorate the final day of battle where more than 200,000 lives were lost at the end of World War II. Accordingly this year’s Okinawa Day is scheduled to be close to this memorial day.
Okinawa Day at Spitalfields is packed full of fun with performing arts (folk and classical songs accompanied by sanshin lute, drumming performance and eisa dance); arts and crafts; food and tourism information.
The prospective programme will include:
Ryukyu Music, Eisa Dance and workshops, Karate performances
Performances of Ryukyu performing arts by individual and groups from the U.K and Okinawa
