The African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM) launches its UK office this August with US film festival favourite ‘Big Words’ in partnership with The New Black as the exclusive UK presenting organisation.
Founded in Los Angeles in 2011, AFFRM is the brainchild of trailblazing 2012 Sundance Film Festival ‘Best Director’ winner; Ava DuVernay and was set up to celebrate fresh voices in Black filmmaking.
Neil Drumming’s ‘BIG WORDS’ is the directorial debut of the former Entertainment Weekly reporter. The film stars Dorian Missick (Southland), Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire), Zachary Booth (Keep The Lights On), Yaya Alafia (The Kids Are All Right and America’s Next Top Model cycle three ) with Darien Sills-Evans and rapper Jean Grae. Set in Brooklyn, New York on the eve of Obama’s history-making election in 2008, three former members of a promising hip-hop crew cross paths again to discover that some things never change. Big Words is a poignant study of black masculinity and friendship set against the beauty of hip hop and the community it can foster.
