On World AIDS Day 2013 (1 December), the Royal Free Rocks With Laughter gala performance will be held at the Adelphi Theatre on The Strand, featuring a host of top name comedians and surprise guests.

The evening will feature performances from Rowan Atkinson, Jo Brand, Julian Clary, Harry Enfield, Harry Hill, League of Gentlemen, Matt Lucas, Lee Mack, Mitchell & Webb, Tim Vine and Paul Whitehouse, with other big name celebrities still to be confirmed.

Royal Free Rocks With Laughter is produced by Geoff Posner and David Tyler for Pozzitive TV and Phil McIntyre Entertainments. They last put on a benefit show in 1998, hosted by Stephen Fry, for World Aids Day called ‘Live from The Lighthouse’.

Geoff Posner says: "This is the fourth benefit Pozzitive have organised around World Aids Day. 15 years ago, we thought the problem of HIV and AIDS would go away and we wouldn't need to do any more benefits. But we were wrong. Although medication exists to fight the disease, it is still on the increase, and a large percentage of sufferers don't have access to them. So we have to find a cure. The new Unit for Immunity, Infection and Transplantation at the Royal Free aims to develop vaccinations, gene therapy and cell therapy to target chronic infections, such as HIV, and, even, in the long-term, cancer. That's why we want to help them on their way.”

The Unit for Immunity, Infection and Transplantation at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead is on the verge of building a huge world-beating research centre with one focus being HIV/AIDS, because recovery is down to Immunology and the body protecting itself. Although one of the initial research areas is centred on HIV/AIDS, ultimately they are hoping this research might cross over with some of the latest research into Transplant Surgery and even cancer. The Government has provided some funding, but the hospital still needs to raise a significant sum of money for the unit.
