Our free ignite series takes place in the relaxed atmosphere of the Royal Albert Hall's Café Consort and features performances from talented artists, from gypsy jazz to Celtic folk. On Friday 28 March, the John Martin Quartet will perform a programme of reflective jazz lyricisms.

John Martin released his debut album Dawning on the F-Ire label in 2011. Described as one of the most pleasing discoveries of 2011, the album responds to a wide range of inspiration, from English jazz and folk to Wayne Shorter and downtown New York, and has received praise from both the great Kenny Wheeler and Iain Bellamy. The quartet features John Martin (tenor and soprano sax), Tim Fairhall (double bass), Dave Hamblett (drums) and Jonjo Grisdale (piano).

"The lyrical sway of Andy Sheppard, the atmospherics of Jan Garbarek, the pensiveness of Kenny Wheeler and the country-chime of early Keith Jarrett." John Fordham, The Guardian
