The Melos Sinfonia celebrates the centenary of the birth of British-Polish composer Andrzej Panufnik with a performance of his Cello Concerto, alongside two great Russian works, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet Fantasy-Overture and the much-neglected Myaskovsky’s Symphony No. 27, written in the last year of his life in 1950.
The Melos Sinfonia will be joined for the concerto by Bartholomew LaFollette, a recent Young Concerts Artist Trust performer and Head of Cello at the Yehudi Menuhin School. Roxanna Panufnik, Andrzej's daughter and a successful composer in her own right, will be talking at the concert about her father’s life and works.
The Melos Sinfonia is an exciting and dynamic orchestra based in London that provides talented young musicians with the invaluable performing experience and exposure necessary to establish a career in the arts. The orchestra undertakes around four to six performances a year across a broad scope of genres – smaller chamber works, large-scale symphonic repertoire and fully staged operatic productions, including new commissions.
The orchestra draws its players from current students and recent graduates of the major conservatoires and universities across the UK, as well as from orchestras such as the European Union Youth Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Britten-Pears Orchestra and the Southbank Sinfonia.
