Since the 1970s Queen have been producing some of the most popular rock tracks of all time. Sadly after the death of the flamboyant and talented front man Freddie Mercury- the music has remained a recorded medium lacking the energy of Queens’s stadium performances. Now Queens’s remaining members have teamed up with celebrated writer Ben Elton to produce an unlikely but spectacular musical, ‘We Will Rock You’ and they certainly do. Choreographer Arlene Phillips has created a visually excellent and powerful dance spectacle. Elton’s script sparkles with wit and comedy.

The story takes place in the future where Rock music has been banned and the world’s youth is forced to listen to virtual boy bands and girl groups. Musical instruments are banned by the global authority. Those who rebel are known as Bohemians- who still believe in rock music. They seek a hero, somebody to stand up against the power and track down the final musical instruments on the planet and inspire a new generation, a new rhapsody.

The music of Queen is pure theatre- dramatic and well loved songs lend themselves seamlessly to the story. ‘Radio Gaga’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and many other classic songs are performed with verve and power by an exceptionally talented and convincing cast. The shows use of pyrotechnics and plasma screens greatly enhances the overall experience. One criticism that could be levelled at this production is that the story has been written to accommodate the songs- but if you suspend reality for a few hours this is a thoroughly entertaining experience.

‘The songs remind you of how fabulous Queen were’. Independent

Took my mum to see it this year, not expecting to enjoy it myself, but having been brought up listening to Queen, I couldn't help buy join in with all the songs, and the storyline's not bad either. Unfortunately our enjoyment was spoiled by two women (in the T-shirts of course) who had obviously been many times - sang at the tops of their voices and pre empted nearly all the jokes. It wasn't big, and it wasn't clever.
