The Merely Players opens its monthly Shakespeare repetory season with one of the bard's earliest comedies.
Forget the set.
Forget the costumes.
Forget elaborate lighting and unnecessary music. Forget detailed props and smoke machines.
Come and see Shakespeare stripped-back.
The actors. The words. The story.
Led by director Scott Ellis, The Merely Players have developed an impressive reputation for impeccable text work and racy storytelling. The Company’s unique style, honed in acclaimed productions of Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet, now leads to its biggest challenge yet: Merely Shakespeare.
A core company of twenty actors will perform a different Shakespeare play each month for one night only, at The Cockpit. And kicking off the repertory season: Merely: The Comedy of Errors.
“I to the world am like a drop of water
That in the ocean seeks another drop,
Who, falling there to find his fellow forth,
Unseen, inquisitive, confounds himself.”
A shipwreck separates twin sons and twin slaves, and the surviving twins are renamed in honor of the lost. The lost however have survived and live in Ephesus: mistaken identity is taken to its extreme and hilarity ensues as wives mistake husbands and servants their masters.
Groups of 8+ get a discounted rate of £5 per ticket. Please call 0207 2582925 to book as a group.
