On 9th February, Ghouls’ Night Out presents an evening of comedy, film, live music and talks, all on the subject of British occultism in the 1970’s.

After the technicolour occult revival of the 1960s, with Crowley on the cover of Sgt. Pepper and The Rolling Stones hanging out with Kenneth Anger, the occultism of the 70s was a dour, brown, sweat-and-smoke-stained affair. It was bad-acid and downers with brown acrylic suits and questionable hair. The decade of The Wicker Man and Black Sabbath, of the Enfield Poltergeist and The Omen - the 70’s revival of witchcraft and the occult influenced its film and music with a subversive and doom-laden atmosphere.

Come in your ritual garb (fancy dress encouraged).

Join occult comedian Andrew O’Neill as he hosts this night of spectral terror with:
• Tarot readings
• Talk on occult rock: Louise Brown, editor of Iron Fist magazine
• Spoken Word: Al Cummins - Historian. Occultist. Poet
• Crucifixes, Cadavers and Demons: Religion and Belief in Horror Films: Dr Karen Oughton
• Genuine* magical performance from noted occultist Thoth Al-Ak Fbf and his Holy Guardian Angel Barry the snake.
• The Power of the Witch (1971): BBC documentary about Witchcraft
• Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell: 70s style proto-metallers

The Ghouls Night Grimoire …more details:

Louise Brown, editor of Iron Fist magazine will delve into the roots of occult rock. While rock n’ roll has always been the Devil’s music, but the dreary and pessimistic political landscape of the ’70s summoned Satan like never before resulting in the likes of Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Coven and Black Widow making their devilish mark on music.

Alexander Cummins, historian, occultist, poet and extremely funny man talks about the English folk magic tradition. He’ll cover cunning folk, amulets, astrology, necromancy, spirits, demonology, and other totally wizard shenanigans.

Crucifixes, Cadavers and Demons: Religion and Belief in Horror Films - they exist in the fires of Hell, quaint English villages and wind-blasted wicker-strewn islands...at least according to horror films. Lecturer in film and media at Regent’s University London, Dr Karen Oughton guides you through The Wicker Man and Satantastic oddity To The Devil: A Daughter in search of magic, the Devil and his marvelous minions. Expect theatrics, film analysis and silliness.

The Power of the Witch, an extremely rare documentary on witchcraft as practised in the late 60s and early 70s. A unique insight into the attitudes, beliefs, and fashions of a forgotten era. (First aired in the UK in 1971 and never seen since!)
The band Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell are the aural equivalent of stumbling into an 18 year-old man’s bedsit in 1973. This Hastings threesome will deliver the kind of greasy progressive metal sound of the early-mid ’70s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXP0Tno_vLg
