200 year old Frost Fair brought back to life at Broadgate, City of London

Broadgate, in partnership with the City of London Corporation and the Cheapside Initiative, are together celebrating the 200th anniversary of the last frost fair.

Relive the fun of London’s famous Frost Fairs on Monday 3rd February at Broadgate Ice Rink. From 5:00pm – 10:00pm in the heart of the City, Frost Fair 200 will turn back time to 1814 with free ice skating, market stalls, street games and live performances.

Frost Fair 200 to be held at Broadgate will see market stalls selling hot and cold food, special treats and souvenirs, reflecting those sold at the Thames, where Londoners revelled in frosty delight all those years ago. Winter warmers and BBQ food will be available from rink side BAR BBQ on Ice, or grab a hot cider from the Corney and Barrow cider chalet.

There will be lots of activities to enjoy and live performances from stilt walkers to minstrels throughout the night.

Frost fairs were held during the period known as the Little Ice Age, when the River Thames froze over. The fairs tempted Londoners onto the ice where tavern booths and stalls were set up to sell food, trinkets and children’s toys.

Broadgate is offering free 45 minute ice skating sessions on the hour from 5:00pm onwards on a first come first served basis. Drop by after work, invite family and friends and enjoy the sparkle of a frosty night the way they did in olde London town.
