An exhibition of original drawings, watercolours and screen-prints from artist and illustrator Zelide Teague.

The drawings, mainly pen and ink, chronicle Teague’s experiences in Israel and Petra in 1958 whilst working for the Jerusalem Post on a range of feature and illustration assignments. Conveying a particular sense of intimacy and respect for her subject matter, the work also displays an evident spontaneity and freshness. She recalls often having to capture her subjects rapidly, setting up where she could, by the side of the road, in crowded streets, trying to balance a bottle of ink on her sketchpad whilst being jostled by passers-by and occasionally camels! “I literally learnt to draw on the hoof’ she says, “It was an extraordinarily inspiring and exhilarating time and I hope these drawings reflect a certain atmosphere of exciting, ramshackle hopefulness.”

Also included in the exhibition are a series of screen prints, which were developed from additional trips to Israel in the 1980s and 90s.
