'It Goes with the Shoes' tells the story of gay rights icon Bette Bourne. With acclaimed playwright Mark Ravenhill as guide, the film paints the uproarious and moving portrait of a rare character whose life tells the story of a generation.

Inspired by Mark Ravenhill’s play, A Life in Three Acts, the film shows Bette at the heart of continual social change and tells the story of how he swapped suits and straight life for frocks and lipstick.

With camp-wit and outrageous humour the film sheds light on a hidden part of gay history: from the early meetings of the Gay Liberation Front, to the first mass gay protests in Europe. It follows Bette’s life in a gay drag commune in London’s Notting Hill and then on a European road trip with drag superstars, The Bloolips, a real life Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

This film screening (90 mins) with be followed by a Q&A (30 mins) with Bette Bourne, Mark Ravenhill, and the film’s director Jeremy Jeffs.
This event is being hosted by The Theatre Applied Centre for Research & Social Practice and The Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.
