CANALOLOGY
A festival of contemporary art for
the hidden arteries of our city
Sixteen create new art in response to Tottenham's canals for Canalology 2014, a POST Artists project.
Canalology is a one-day art festival giving visitors a different experience of the Tottenham canalside, filled with subtle interventions and surprising new functionality - including a pedal powered candyfloss maker, cloud deckchairs, portable foxes and an elaborate home for birds.
Through film, drawing and installation, artists map the network of waterways exploring these as passageways or as barriers in the landscape of the city, delving into their hidden histories. Sculpture and architecture projects explore the habitats of the Lea Valley Canalside, and its potential as a home for wild or mythical creatures.
The festival invites you to discover a side to Tottenham that you never knew existed.
Artists taking part in Canalology include AtelierFraSe (Francesco Gorni and Serena Montesissa), Gwen Bajon, James Capper, Mary Yacoob, Olga Koroleva, Fiona Long, Rebecca Leach, Ilka Leukefeld, Samantha Penn, Jenny Rolfe Herbert, Natasha Vicars, Helena Wee and Pippa Koszerek working in collaboration with Marco Cali and Aliki Kylika as the Unasked-for Public Art Agency.
Canalology takes place in public spaces between Markfield Park and Stonebridge Lock and includes sculpture, drawing, digital animation, performance art, installation and architecture alongside a programme of storytelling, talks and workshops.
POST is a network for artists making site-specific work, with over 40 members in London and the UK. POST has previously presented major art projects in outer London boroughs.
The exhibition has been made possible by Grants for the Arts funding from Arts Council England.
