In case you’re struggling with the name, “Free Cinema” is a series of Free screenings of Cinematic works. You’re welcome.

As well as the literal take on our title, it is also a demonstration of our desire to release cinema from its perceived function of escapism. We aim to do this by showing works that feature and focus on all the uncomfortable bits -- the sort of films you don’t exactly want to watch with your mum.

We’ve handpicked a diverse array of challenging films to shock and amuse you. After each screening comes the important bit where we eat cake. When the cake is gone and we awaken from our collective sugar coma, we talk about what we’ve just seen. We try to work out why we watched the film, what effect it has had on us all and how it might enlighten us to social aspects that its story or images might’ve challenged (because learning with cake is fun).

Our first set of screenings is ‘A Season For Lovers’; as you might of guessed we’re not showing Casablanca, unless that’s the one with the psychopath, or the cannibalistic love interest? Come to think of it, I think they pitched that to Warner Brothers but they weren’t so keen.

So just think of it like a book club but less stuffy and you don’t have to do any homework, like pre-reading a book. It all happens on the night, like show business!

Free Cinema takes place at the Deptford Lounge on the 3rd Thursday of the month; 6:30 - 9:30pm.

Oh, and please remember to turn off your phones.
