Following sold-out screenings of Day of the Locust and Sunset Boulevard, Temple Studios, home to punchdrunk’s The Drowned Man, will be opening its cinema doors for two further screenings in May 2014.
A rare showing of Wozzeck, a 1947 adaptation of Georg Büchner’s dramatic fragment will take place on Sunday 18th May at 11.30am and 1.45 pm.
Selected by punchdrunk’s Felix Barrett and Maxine Doyle, both films will be screened on 16mm prints in the atmospheric cinema space, The Encino Theater. The cinema is housed within the extraordinary environs of Temple Studios’ set for The Drowned Man, which recalls the fading glamour of 1960s Los Angeles film industry and is itself inspired by Büchner’s Woyzeck.
Wozzeck: A rarely screened gem of German post-war cinema, Georg C. Aware’s 1947 film, adapted from Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, recounts the life of Fusillier Wozzeck, a man seemingly doomed from birth. Subjected to medical experiment that ultimately proves fatal, Wozzeck’s story is shaded by a tragic relationship with his lover Marie and their illegitimate child. Examining predestination, murder and anti-militarism, this post-war expressionist vision will stay with you for some time.
