The Crossness Engines Trust, a well-known industrial heritage site, is having a themed steaming day—Model Engineering— at its main site (see address below). The site offers some of the most spectacular ornamental Victorian cast ironwork to be found in the world today. It is also one of the only two Grade I listed industrial buildings in London.
The cast ironwork that Nikolaus Pevsner describes as “a masterpiece of engineering-a Victorian cathedral of ironwork”.
As part of the model engineering steaming day, visitors can choose to learn about the world of steam engineering in industrial Britain. For those desiring to learn more about the original rotative beam engines, the recently restored beam engine, Prince Consort, the world’s largest working rotative beam engine and will be in steam throughout the day. This event is fun packed and there is something to see for everyone. The event will feature realistic Meccano models, high quality engineering models and so much more. There will be a live streaming radio event with the Cray Valley Radio Society. Kids won’t miss out either and will be able to view the Lego train layout.
The site also offers refreshments in its café and souvenirs and gifts are easily bought at the museum shop. The Crossness Pumping Station is located approximately 6 miles from Junction 1 of the M25. The nearest rail station is Abbey Wood from where there are frequent bus services.
