In the past few decades, radiotherapy has developed from a very crude treatment into one of the most complex and sophisticated types of cancer treatment available today. Major advances in computing, engineering and physics have all contributed to its technical development. Meanwhile, the study of the effects of radiation in the laboratory has supported this clinical development. This lecture will highlight the major contribution patients have made to the improvements in radiotherapy through their participation in clinical research including clinical trials.
