The Floating Cinema - Open Air Weekenders

Continuing to work with Somewhere (artists/filmmakers Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie), UP Projects is delighted to announce its full Floating Cinema summer 2014 programme, supported by The Legacy List, the charity of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in partnership with the Canal & River Trust. Bookings for The Floating Cinema’s ‘Extra-International’ programme are now open, ticket prices range from free to £25.00 with concessions available.

‘Extra International’ presents over 40 events, including ‘Open Air Weekenders’ at various locations across London, on-board and outdoor film screenings, floating tours, talks, music and workshops for all ages as the Floating Cinema barge, designed by Duggan Morris Architects, navigates from east to west London over the summer months. As always film is a particularly important aspect across the programme, with a focus on international documentaries, shorts, features and artist moving image. ‘Extra-International’ will focus on themes of migration, and the interpretation of the UK, its culture and its people, through the experiences of other nationalities. Taking the waterways as a curatorial framework, the programme will also explore themes of transient cultures and the shifting contexts of canals, rivers and seas both locally and internationally.

Working in partnership with three leading international film festivals and cultural organisations - namely Ambulante Documentary Film Festival (Mexico), Centre For Contemporary Chinese Art (Manchester, UK) and Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival (Jihlava, Czech Republic), to showcase global film and cultural highlights with a special focus on Central and South America, China and Central and Eastern Europe. ‘Extra International’ offers a series of high profile ‘Open Air Weekenders’ in spectacular settings across London, including Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Granary Square in King’s Cross and Merchant Square, Paddington Basin. The programme will also include a residency at London’s St Katharine Docks.
