In a series of illustrated talks, Daniel Rosenthal, author of The National Theatre Story (winner of the Theatre Book Prize 2013), explores the film adaptations of acclaimed NT plays.
When Peter Hall staged Amadeus (Olivier, 1979), Peter Shaffer’s drama about Salieri (Paul Scofield) and Mozart (Simon Callow), director and playwright enjoyed the greatest commercial success of their careers. Hall, to his lasting regret, lost the chance to make the screen version. Instead Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) took charge of the lavish Amadeus (1984), which won eight Oscars, including Best Actor, for F. Murray Abraham as Salieri and Best Picture.
