Scientist designed super-grapes were all the rage in the roaring twenties and so South Africa’s signature grape was created, although it wasn’t until the forties it was commercially produced. A cross between Cinsaut (known as Hermitage in SA) and the stylish Pinot Noir; for years it was misunderstood but it’s now enjoying a renaissance thanks to commitment and effort from some of South Africa’s most renowned winemakers.
