Writers & Artists present a series of masterclasses on the writing process, in aid of Book Aid International and World Book Day. In this session, join bestselling author Rowan Coleman as she tackles that most elusive of subjects – the writing voice.

Literary agents want it, industry insiders are always talking about it and writers need to develop a strong, unique voice if they want to get their published.

Think about it like answering a phone call – if a friend calls you, you’d know who it is as soon as you hear their voice. If a reader is familiar with your work, you want them to be able to read one paragraph of your writing and hear your voice in it.

In these two hours, Rowan will ask the big questions – what ‘voice’ actually is, why everyone wants it, how you can identify and develop your own voice, authenticity and adapting your distinct style depending on audience and tone – and help you to answer them by asking you to reflect on your own work, exploring the way you write with a series of exercises, practical tips and techniques.
