What do you want to be when you grow up? I’m sure you can remember being asked that question. Meet Biba, she wants to be a teacher to help other kids like herself to learn. Bida fled Mali in 2012 and is living in a refugee camp in Niger. Join us at Somerset House to hear her story.

Education plays a key role in reducing the effects of war-trauma, providing children with stability during and after emergencies, helping them to develop to their full potential.

However, for many children caught up in crisis, there is often little opportunity to go to school. The International Rescue Committee is proud to partner with the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) as part of its EU Children of Peace initiative to provide much needed education support to children in refugee camps in Tanzania and Niger, giving them a space to help them heal and protect them from abuse and exploitation.

This exhibition will bring together a series of photographs and short films from the photographer Peter Biro that will explore the lives of refugee children in Niger and Tanzania who have been affected by conflict. Through this exhibition visitors will explore the stories of children, parents, teachers and IRC staff members who are working together to give children impacted by crisis an opportunity to access education. Visitors will have a chance to hear first-hand experiences of the impact that going to school has on each one of their lives, and learn about the hopes and dreams of the children benefiting from the EU Children of Peace project.

“I like my teacher because he is my fellow human being” Ebalo, aged 7, Nyarugusu refugee camp, Tanzania.
