The Bagri Foundation’s second World Cinema Club of 2015 turns its attention to Korean cinema with a talk by the respected film expert and academic, Dr. Jinhee Choi.
In a recent issue of Newsweek, Korea was described as "a kind of Cold War theatre of the absurd." The North-South divide in the Korean peninsula is a concern, seemingly without end, which carries great political and cultural weight.
This talk will examine the tensions inherent in North-South Korean relations by looking at South Korean blockbusters such as Shiri (1999) and Joint Security Area (2000), as well as the offbeat thriller, Poongsan (2011) and the espionage film, The Berlin File (2013).
Dr. Jinhee Choi is senior lecturer of film studies at King's College London.
Recommended films for pre-viewing:
Shiri (1999).
Joint Security Area (2000).
The Berlin File (2013).
