This free half-day workshop will explore the fascinating collection of pauper letters held by The National Archives.
While most archival material relating to 19th century poverty was written either by the elites who legislated on the matter or the administrators who managed poverty at a local level, pauper letters offer a rare insight into the experience of poverty as written by the poor themselves.
The workshop will offer practical guidance on locating pauper letters within the archives, and examine the historical value of these letters, statements and petitions that demonstrate the concerns, thoughts and feelings of the Victorian poor.
We run an exciting range of events and exhibitions on a wide variety of topics. For more details, visit nationalarchives.gov.uk/whatson.
Entrance to The National Archives is free and there is no need to book, see nationalarchives.gov.uk/visit for more information.
