rarescale presents a varied programme of new works for low flutes, guitar and electronics. Takemitsu’s iconic work for alto flute and guitar, Toward the Sea is heard alongside newer additions to the repertoire, with works by Claes Biehl and Michael Oliva adding electronics to the classic flute and guitar combination. Premieres include works for a wide range of flutes, including Kingma System (quartertone) bass flute and C flute, performed by one of the leading exponents of low flutes, rarescale’s Artistic Director, Carla Rees.

rarescale is a flexible-instrumentation contemporary chamber music ensemble, formed by alto and bass flute specialist Carla Rees in 2003. Using between one and twelve players, the ensemble has a particular commitment to the work of emerging composers and the creation of chamber music repertoire for alto and bass flutes.
