Along with Bheki Mseleku’s last great collaborator and arranger Gareth Lockrane and Special Guest South African virtuoso pianist Bokani Dyer, harmonica player Adam Glasser (curator of SA-UK 2015 Jazz Series) presents material from an iconic range of South African jazz composers performed by his “All-Star” band. From legends Jonas Gwangwa, Chris McGregor and Victor Ndlazilwana to more contemporary compositions, including Bokani’s own acclaimed work from his albums “Emancipate the Story” and the newly released “World Music”, this terrific 10-piece collective plays with the power and passion that this music demands. One of South Africa’s most significant contemporary composers and jazz pianists, ‘Standard Bank Artist of the Year’ winner Bokani Dyer has already made a considerable impact touring Europe in 2014 with his international ensemble and it is with great pleasure that we welcome him to the Club this evening. The lineup of this unique band features some of the most prominent award-winning UK players on the scene, all of whom have an affinity for South African jazz: Bokani Dyer-piano, Adam Glasser-harmonica, Gareth Lockrane-flute, Jason Yarde, Tony Kofi-saxes, Nick Smart, Chris Batchelor-trumpets, Harry Brown-trombone, Steve Watts-bass and Tim Giles-drums. If you have any interest at all in Township music (and even if you don’t…) this unique gig is an absolute must. Booking advised.
