SHIGETO is not just the production moniker of Detroit-born beatsmith Zachary Saginaw. It's a reference to his Japanese heritage, and in the word's literal translation, "to grow", an appropriate pseudonym given Saginaw's rapid rise to prominence since his breakout LP, 'No Better Time Than Now'. Sounding like a blend of early Boards of Canada with a twist of Onra's Asian sampling palette, it propelled Shigeto to the pinnacle of the contemporary hip hop scene. Shigeto's earthy, percussive-led take on hip hop has been released exclusively on Ghostly International ever since, with his recent 'Intermission' EP garnering a particularly positive critical reception.
He's joined by Polish producer Heathered Pearls. Although Jakub Alexander's music is often pigeonholed as ambient, dub techno or minimal, in truth his music doesn't comfortably fit within any genre form. Ghostly International LPs 'Loyal' and 'Body Complex' are fluid and unpredictable, relying instead on sparse electronics, delicate drum programming, and a constant melancholic atmosphere. Having toured all over USA with the Ghostly crew, February 11th will mark Heathered Pearls's debut performance this side of the Atlantic.
New York musical prodigy Lord RAJA rounds out the bill on 11th February. More than just the latest hip hop talent from the Ghostly production line, Chester Raj Anand is a young producer with rich musical experience, as influenced by classic Chicago footwork artists R.P. Boo and DJ Rashad as J Dilla and Madlib. 'A Constant Moth', his debut LP, confidently blended elements of juke and footwork with rich, languid instrumental hip hop.
