Merthyr Rising: Tom Johnson and Charlotte James

This December, Box Studio presents Merthyr Rising, an exhibition of handprinted photographs from photographer Tom Johnson in collaboration with stylist Charlotte James.

Merthyr Rising is the result of multiple trips to the small town of Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Johnson and James’s collaboration focuses on the positivity, humour & optimism of the community and their unification despite the social and economic challenges in modern Britain.

The subjects who are passers-by or friends and acquaintances of James are subtlety styled in
current designer garments and vintage pieces, depicting everyday rituals and situations of beauty that are often overlooked.

The exhibition features 27 large scale images and an accompanying publication.
