Peter Singer BA, MA, BPhil (Oxon), Australian moral philosopher and Ira W. DeCamp Professor of bioethics at Princeton University, will be giving a free public lecture this June as part of The NCH Lectures: Spring Season - a new series of public lectures organised by New College of the Humanities (NCH) and delivered by the College’s world-leading academics.

In his public lecture entitled ‘Famine, Affluence and Morality' Revisited’, named after his book of the same title of 1972, which is now being relaunched by Oxford University Press (OUP) with a new introduction from Singer and a foreword from Bill and Melinda Gates, Singer will elaborate on his view that we have the same moral obligations to those far away as we do to those close to us. According to Singer, choosing not to send life-saving money to starving people on the other side of the earth is the moral equivalent of neglecting to save drowning children because we prefer not to muddy our shoes.

Singer, who was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005 and is widely regarded as one of the intellectual fathers of the animal rights movement, will come to London in his capacity as Visiting Professor of Philosophy at NCH, where he will give a series of lectures, including this public lecture on effective altruism.

The lecture will be accompanied by a book signing following the lecture, and copies of the newly edited ‘Famine, Affluence and Morality' Revisited’ will be available for purchase from OUP.

The lecture is open to the public and free of charge, and will take place on 8th June 2016, 6PM-8PM at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Admission is by ticket only. Please note tickets are strictly limited and early booking is strongly advised.
