Adam Farquhar and Angela Dappert explore how collaborative networks create opportunities for better research in the digital age
Public perception of research is changing. The nostalgic image of the lone thinker, of the Einsteins and the Newtons, is giving way to an appreciation that discoveries are the product of collaboration. Increasingly, this collaboration cuts across national borders, disciplines and institutions. Progress comes from failed experiments, from building on the findings of others – not just Eureka moments.
Angela and Adam discuss how publications, researchers, organisations, and funders can all be connected through the use of unique and persistent identification tools. They explain how these new tools are integrating services to create a joined-up, connected international research infrastructure. This fosters even more collaboration and better research through reuse of data and validation of results. It also enables peer review of publications with much more supporting information at hand, credit for more of the researchers' work, and information to better assess the research impact.
This talk describes work undertaken as part of the European Commission-funded THOR project.
Please bring your packed lunch. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided.
This event is part of the Feed the Mind series of lunchtime research talks.
